An Open Letter to Orange is the New Black

Dear Orange is the New Black. I am writing today to say that blah blah blah….totally kidding. I just wanted to see if writing starting this with “An Open Letter….” would make more people click the link. The Internet loves Open Letters. Everything I see today is an open letter to so and so. It’s so annoying. Anyone can write an open letter. Big whoop.

Anyways, I do want to write about Orange is the New Black because it consumed 13 hours of my life, almost all of them in a row because I binge watched it like nobody’s business.

Orange is the New Black is a Netflix original series, like House of Cards. I also binge watched that so figured this program would be good as well. I had heard about it because a PR company sent around a package and a Netflix code to a bunch of influencers that I follow on my social media channels. Not to old Val though (blogger FIT!!!!!!! Ahhhhh. JK). Though I haven’t seen any written reviews yet from those influencers soooooo JUST SAYING. PR companies, I love SHOWS! I eat them up like M&Ms under the covers at night. When I love a show, I become obsessed. So here we are, watching Orange is the New Black for the second time because now Brody wants to watch it too.

Anyways, what’s all the fuss about? Orange is the New Black chronicles the stories of a diverse group of women in a correctional facility. Each character has their own unique story and most have an endearing quality or two as well. Sounds like a basic plot right? So why is everyone going nuts over it?

Well I can’t speak for everyone else, but I think what’s drawing me in is that it has the same type of interesting story lines, excellent character development and good production value as something I’d watch on HBO or Showcase or AMC or FX. The difference is, the majority of my favourite shows on these networks are all dominated with male casts and testosterone driven plots. I haven’t been this interested in a female cast since Sex in the City. Orange is the New Black offers the same type of guilty raw pleasure as Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad but it’s all chicks! Some more attractive than others, though all equally interesting.

The verdict? Get on it. It’s been too long since a female cast rocked a drama series like this (when was the last time?) and they are doing it right. I’m hooked. Can’t wait for season 2!

Great post. Glad you liked the Show!
After all the tweet hype from some TO peeps, I thought I’d check it out.
I didn’t love it. It had some great points, funny and moving moments and even an okay story line…. but, I felt like I had to force my way though many parts.

(I think I’m the only person who wasn’t MADLY in love with it based on tweets).

Also, yes, “The Open Letter” part in your title was interesting but, the “Blah, Blah, Blah” is what drew me in. I’m sad like that.

I got sent the book via PR and am HUGE lover of Netflix series. Wasn’t sure before it came out but, I LOVED this show. I can’t wait for season 2! It was so great! The book (real story) is quite a bit different from the the show and an awesome summer read. Glad to hear you love it too!

As I shared, to much discussion on Facebook… the first half of the season was compelling. The second half was a disappointment in that everyone in there should be in there. Permanently. None of them have any redeeming qualities it seems.

I read the book a few years ago and enjoyed it.
