The Carrie Diaries: Yay or Nay?

As an avid Sex and the City fan, I had decided to ignore the Carrie Diaries. First of all, it’s on City TV, not HBO. How good could it possibly be? Also, who’s this AnnaSophia Robb?, the girl they cast as Carrie? I did not approve of this choice.

I did a little research on her and discovered this quote:

“I know ‘The Carrie Diaries’ is going to get compared to the original ‘Sex and the City’ but we’re never going to be that. There are lots of new characters and a love interest. But it has the same heart as ‘Sex and the City’ and the same beat of the city.” – Robb

Ok, fine. As long as she knows that it will never be Sex and the City, I figured I’d give it a chance. I watched the pilot and I was pleasantly surprised. The Carrie Diaries is an undeniably charming show. The clothes are florescent, the music is all 80s and you get a pretty good insight into the life of the iconic Carrie Bradshaw before Manhattan glam.

AnnaSophia plays a pretty convincing teen Carrie too, aside from the obvious nose differences. It’s actually very nice to see Bradshaw at this age;  sweet and innocent and a bit of a doll. Adult Carrie is a bit damaged, jaded and rough around the edges, (which is why we like her) but it’s interesting to see where she came from.

So, it’s not HBO but it’s definitely a guilty indulgence.

I say ‘yay’. How about you?

I say yay! I really enjoyed the premiere, I thought AnnaSophia Robb was adorable and charming. And I’m loving the fashions and music!

I thought it had just enough to lift it above the usual CW drivel that gets pushed. The wardrobe and music were fantastic. I was a very big fan of everything that had Carrie in New York but she’s still got the suburban innocence. I’ll give it a few episodes before having a final decision.

It should be noted that the show drew ratings right in line with Gossip Girl (which used to be in that slot) and 90210 so it should at least get a 13 episode run before the network decides its fate.
